Introduction

The women’s basketball final, won by the United States on August 11, local time, was not just another victory; it marked the end of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Held from July 24 to August 11, the Paris Games offered countless memorable moments for athletes and spectators alike. Many athletes not only clinched gold medals in their respective sports but also set new records in the history of the Games. Rizki Juniansyah, for instance, made history with his clean and jerk lift of 199 kg, surpassing the previous record set by Chinese weightlifter Shi Ziyong at the Tokyo Olympics. Rizki also set a national milestone by becoming the youngest athlete ever to win an Olympic gold medal.

Beyond the record-breaking achievements, the 2024 Olympics also brought to light some elements that sparked curiosity and debate among the public regarding the intentions of the host city, Paris. The opening ceremony, for example, generated controversy due to its reenactment of the Marie Antoinette incident and the portrayal of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” drawing mixed reactions from netizens.

Moreover, as the host city, Paris showcased its commitment to combating climate change. The organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics vowed to make these Games the greenest in history, aiming to achieve half the carbon footprint of London 2012 and Rio 2016. This promise was reflected in several key decisions, such as not constructing new stadiums and instead utilizing existing ones, providing recycled-material beds, expanding plant-based menu options, and opting for electric rather than diesel vehicles, etc.

The Paris Olympics not only showcased fierce competition among athletes vying for medals but also raised social issues through both subtle and explicit messages throughout the event. This approach is particularly interesting when compared to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In Tokyo, the primary focus was on Japan’s success in hosting the Games amidst a global pandemic, with strict health protocols in place. In contrast, Paris presented a broader narrative of inclusivity, sustainability, and diversity. For instance, events at Paris 2024 explicitly supported movements like gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental campaigns, positioning sports as a means to drive broader social change. The emphasis on these themes was evident in bold choices like the opening ceremony and in various campaigns and collaborations with social and environmental organizations.

Looking Back at the Paris 2024 Olympics: Unforgettable Moments

As the curtain falls on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the world reflects on a fortnight of extraordinary athletic achievements, cultural celebrations, and global unity. The City of Light lived up to its name, shining brightly as it hosted one of the most memorable Olympic Games in recent history. The Paris Olympics truly embodied the Olympic spirit of bringing the world together. As highlighted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), “The Olympic Games celebrate diversity on the global stage“. This was evident in the record-breaking participation of athletes from over 200 nations, each bringing their unique cultural heritage to the forefront.

The opening ceremony along the Seine River showcased France’s rich history and cultural diversity, setting the tone for a Games that embraced inclusivity and representation. From the refugee Olympic team to the increased gender balance across all sports, Paris 2024 made significant strides in promoting equality and diversity. The Games witnessed numerous breathtaking performances that will be etched in Olympic history. While specific results cannot be predicted, it’s safe to say that world records were shattered, underdogs triumphed, and legendary athletes cemented their legacy. The introduction of breaking (breakdancing) as a new Olympic sport brought fresh energy and youth appeal to the Games, attracting a new generation of Olympic enthusiasts.

Beyond the sporting arena, the Paris Olympics served as a platform for addressing pressing global issues. As noted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the Olympics often put a spotlight on societal issues . Paris 2024 was no exception, with athletes and organizers alike using their platforms to advocate for climate action, racial equality, and human rights.  The Games’ commitment to sustainability was evident in its use of existing and temporary venues, as well as initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the event. This approach set a new standard for future Olympic hosts. As discussed in a Frontiers in Sports and Active Living article, the legacy of Olympic Games extends far beyond the event itself. The Paris Olympics left a lasting impact on the host city, from improved infrastructure to increased tourism and cultural exchange.  Moreover, the Games inspired a new generation of athletes and renewed interest in sports and physical activity among the general public. The success of the Paris Olympics in promoting inclusivity, sustainability, and global unity will undoubtedly influence future Olympic Games and international sporting events.

Local Culture on the Global Stage: Cultural Highlights at the Paris 2024 Olympics

More than just a sporting event, the Olympics is also a place of great fusion of sport and culture. The Olympics brings together athletes -as delegates representing their countries who hold tightly and proudly to their country’s identity- sent from various countries with their respective backgrounds and cultures that participate in enriching diversity. The Olympics offers a platform to promote the culture of participating countries and makes the Olympics a huge cultural exchange event.

The Olympic Games were first held in ancient Greece not only for competition, but also as a religious ceremony to worship the god Zeus. Despite their conflicts and differences of the time, it gathered athletes from all the city state (form of state at the time), and made the Olympics a symbol of unity in the name of celebrating sport competition. The spirit of unity continued until today, highlighting cultural diversity through competition and sportsmanship

Didn’t want to miss this opportunity, the IOC use this to momentum to liven up the Olympics through engaging and promoting cultural diversity, and positioning Olympics as an important player in maintaining world unity and peace. As a realization, they create programs that use local culture as main subject in every Olympics that ever run. The Cultural Olympiad is a multidisciplinary artistic and cultural programme that will run before and during the Games and until 8 September 2024. Through this programme, the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are opening their doors wide to culture and artists.

Paris 2024 vs. Tokyo 2020: What Was Different?

As the world eagerly anticipates the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, it’s interesting to compare how this upcoming event differs from its predecessor, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. While both Games share the Olympic spirit, several key factors set them apart, from technological advancements to cultural presentations and logistical arrangements. One of the most significant differences between Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 lies in the realm of technology, particularly in broadcasting and media coverage.According to Sports Video Group, NBC Olympics’ technical efforts for Paris 2024 are projected to be “four times larger compared to Tokyo 2020 Games”. This substantial increase in technical capacity suggests that viewers can expect more comprehensive and immersive coverage of the Paris Olympics. The expansion likely includes advancements in broadcast technology, more camera angles, enhanced graphics, and potentially more extensive streaming options. While Tokyo 2020 already pushed boundaries with its use of technology, Paris 2024 is set to take it a step further. We can anticipate more sophisticated use of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality to enhance both the in-person and at-home viewing experience.

Paris 2024 is adopting a unique approach by integrating the Games into the city’s iconic landscape. According to the official Paris tourism website, the 2024 Games will be unlike any other. The organizers plan to use the city itself as a stunning backdrop for many events. For instance, beach volleyball will be played near the Eiffel Tower, and equestrian events will take place in the gardens of Versailles. This approach contrasts with Tokyo 2020, which primarily used dedicated sporting venues.Learning from Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 is putting a stronger emphasis on sustainability and long-term legacy. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) notes that lessons from Tokyo are being applied to Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028, and Brisbane 2032 . This includes more efficient use of existing infrastructure and temporary venues, reducing the need for new construction and ensuring that Olympic facilities have a purpose beyond the Games.

One of the most stark contrasts between Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 will likely be the presence of spectators. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tokyo 2020 was held largely without in-person audiences. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Paris 2024 is expected to welcome full crowds, restoring the vibrant atmosphere that is quintessential to the Olympic experience. While Tokyo 2020 innovated with digital fan engagement due to the pandemic restrictions, Paris 2024 aims to combine the best of both worlds. It plans to leverage the digital engagement strategies developed during Tokyo 2020 while also providing an unforgettable in-person experience for those attending the Games.
